In a time when bank mergers and corporate takeovers dominate the headlines, locally owned community banks like Citizens Bank stand out as a refreshing exception. For more than 90 years, Citizens Bank has been more than just a financial institution—it's been a trusted partner, evolving alongside the communities it proudly serves.
It all began in November 1934, when Carter County was still recovering from the Great Depression. With $75,000 and a vision to fill the gap left by years without a local bank, Citizens Bank opened its doors and brought renewed hope to the community.
By 1962, the bank’s assets had grown to $5 million, and Joe LaPorte, Jr. stepped in as the fourth president. Under his leadership, Citizens Bank gained national recognition for its strong performance and commitment to service, making a name for itself well beyond the Tri-Cities region. His impact was so lasting that in 2006, he was posthumously inducted into the Tennessee Bankers Hall of Fame.
Carrying on the LaPorte legacy, Joe LaPorte, III joined the bank in 1979. Thanks to his thoughtful leadership and strategic growth, Citizens Bank has expanded its reach while staying true to its community roots. Today, the bank proudly serves customers from Bristol to Lenoir City, Tennessee.
Citizens Bank has built its reputation as one of the strongest, most reliable financial institutions in Tennessee. "Staying independent and focused on our customers is what sets us apart," says Chairman Joe LaPorte, III. "As we grow, our dedication to local, community banking will always come first."
